Shoplifter runs down security officer www.privateofficer.com

FREMONT CA. Jan 5 2008 — A 35-year-old man was arrested Friday afternoon on suspicion of several felonies after he was caught shoplifting, used his van as a weapon against a security agent, and then crashed the vehicle into a bystander's van about a half-mile away as he fled from authorities, police said.
No one was seriously hurt, but the arrested man and two people had to be taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries, Fremont police Sgt. Jeff Swadener said.
The incident happened just after 1 p.m., when three security agents at Marshalls discount store at The Hub watched a man — identified later as Hayward resident Robert Barrett — leave the store with clothes without paying for them, Swadener said.
The agents stopped the man just outside the business and then took him back into the store for questioning. But while he was sitting with the officers in an office, Barrett ran out of the room, bolted from the store and got into his van, Swadener said.
He then lightly struck one of the store security officers with the vehicle as he left the parking lot, he said.
With police searching for him, Barrett apparently took back streets from The Hub to Blacow Road, where he continued to drive north to Mowry Avenue, the sergeant said.
There he headed east on a frontage road, struck another vehicle near Donner Way and kept going. He then flipped a U-turn at Sutter Drive and headed west on a Mowry Avenue frontage road, Swadener said.

Barrett, who stands 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 300 pounds, then ditched his vehicle and ran across Blacow Road until he was tackled by a gang of police officers behind a fast-food restaurant, the sergeant said.
Barrett was taken to a local hospital for treatment and arrested on suspicion of petty theft, assault with a deadly weapon, hit and run and evading police.
