CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A woman arrested and charged with embezzlement from her job is also suspected of stealing people’s identities at Central Piedmont Community College.
The woman in question was arrested and charged New Year’s Day with two counts of embezzlement and is already out of jail. Police say a different case still under investigation allegedly involving the same person appears to be more involved.
A search warrant says the 18-year-old was a former work study student at CPCC.
Work study is a program giving students campus jobs to help them pay for college.
The former student's supervisor says the woman "used her credit card" to buy items from Wal-Mart.com. The warrant also says the supervisor saw the woman "writing down Social Security numbers and birthdates from employee files she had access to."
Police say one attempted purchase was made from a CPCC computer.
Overall, the warrant says the former student tried to buy 17 items worth just over $4,000 from various Web sites and shipping information was in her name. Those orders were cancelled due to suspected fraud.
But, one order did go through -- an MP3 player for $100.
Police searched the woman's house, confiscated computer equipment, a credit card, business card, prepaid Visa, insurance card, purse, book and student identification in other people's names.
CPCC says due to personnel matters, they can't say if names found on cards at the woman's house match CPCC employees.
It's still an ongoing investigation and the woman has not been charged in this case and that's why we're not showing her face.
Roughly the same time police started this investigation, CPCC notified employees about a possible security breach, asked them to check their credit but found no misuse of CPCC information.
There's no word if the two are connected.
CPCC officials say the college changed some of its security measures after asking employees to check their personal information.
