Shoplifter carjacks driver, leads police on 2 chases www.privateofficer.com

BRIDGEPORT CT. Jan 2, 2007 — A city man tried to flee from a supermarket with a load of stolen hygiene supplies by commandeering a car Thursday night, police said.
Police captured Carlos Ayala, 27, of Trumbull Avenue, following two separate chases.
He was charged with third-degree robbery, attempted carjacking, escape, sixth-degree larceny and resisting arrest. He is being held in lieu of $55,000 bond.
Police were called shortly after 10 p.m. to the Stop & Shop supermarket on Main Street to investigate a report of a shoplifting suspect who was in custody. However, as officers pulled up to the store, they saw Ayala run from the store with store security personnel in pursuit.
Police joined the chase, but Ayala tried to avoid capture by running through nearby backyards. At one point, police said, Ayala jumped into the back seat of a car stopped on Oxford Street and ordered the driver to speed away.
The man, however, refused and Ayala got out of the car and ran off, police said.
As more officers were called in, they finally cornered Ayala on Park Drive and took him into custody. During the chase, two officers suffered minor injuries.
Ayala was found to have 10 bars of Dove soap and six toothbrushes from the supermarket in his possession, police said.
But the incident was not over.
Once at police headquarters, Ayala complained about injuries and medics were called. While being treated, Ayala managed to get away from the medics and ran out of the building
Officers caught up to him on Highland Avenue, but they said Ayala refused to stop. Police said they used a Taser to disable him, but he appeared to be stunned only briefly and continued his efforts to escape. Ayala was stunned by the Taser a second time and this time was sufficiently immobilized long enough for officers to handcuff him, police said.
