Gift Card Scammers Busted www.privateofficer.com

NORTH ATTLEBORO Jan 2 2008- Police seized thousands of dollars in merchandise they say was stolen from stores at Emerald Square mall with fraudulent gift cards.Two suspects were arrested Thursday night in the alleged scam and police are seeking a third suspect who eluded them, authorities said Friday.
Detective Lt. David Dawes said police are conducting an investigation into the alleged fraud. A store clerk at the Foot Locker store told police two men and a woman attempted to buy $585 in merchandise with gift cards that were rejected and attempted to call security before the suspects fled.Police arrived and found one of the men in the parking lot and the woman outside a 2007 Jeep which had been rented from Budget Rentals at Logan Airport in Boston.Inside the vehicle were Playstation 3 and X-Box game systems, computer games, clothing, and assorted gift cards. Police also seized $2,190 in mostly $100 bills from one of the suspects.Police said six stores, including Sears and Macy's department stores, were victims in the alleged fraud.
Arrested were Ashesha A. Rockette, 25, and Jermaine Phillips, 26, both of Boston.They were apprehended about 8:40 p.m. by officers Joshua McMahon, David Lowe and Jason Roy, who were assisted by Lt. Charles Nicholas and Sgt. Bart Folan.The suspects were arraigned Friday in Attleboro District Court, where they pleaded innocent to charges of larceny, fraud, identity theft and receiving stolen property.Rockette was also wanted on two Boston police warrants for failing to appear in court as a witness, police said.Phillips also was charged with using a motor vehicle without authority for failing to return the rental car by Dec. 18 and carrying a dangerous weapon. A switchblade knife was found inside the vehicle.
