Mobile Ala. Dec. 6, 2007
A 16-year-old on a five-day armed robbery spree through Mobile and his one-time accomplice were caught Monday with loot from their latest holdup, police said Tuesday. The take include at least 20 one-dollar bills.Less than 15 minutes after the money was taken from a Subway restaurant in Toulminville, an officer spotted the two suspects driving in the reported getaway car, said police spokeswoman Nancy JohnsonOfficers pulled over the red Chevrolet Cavalier, Johnson said.Robbery detectives came to the scene and interviewed the teenagers, connecting the younger one to nine holdups between Nov. 29 and Monday, Johnson said.Police information Monday night indicated that one way that detectives linked the men to the Subway robbery was the fact that they found 20 one-dollar bills in the car. Johnson said the police department does not release the amount of money taken in robberies but that this robbery involved a small sum.In addition to the Subway, the 16-year-old is accused of robbing six gas stations, a cash advance store and a Chinese restaurant, she said. The stores in question were spread throughout the city, including northeast Mobile, downtown and west of Interstate 65.A semiautomatic handgun and a stainless steel revolver were used in some of the robberies, Johnson said. Video surveillance shows the 16-year-old with a shirt wrapped around his face at one of the businesses, she said.Johnson declined to release the 16-year-old's name, citing his age. However, online jail records identified him as Vincent Paul Figaro of Mobile. The alleged one-time accomplice, 19-year-old Jeffery Knight of Mobile, was charged with one count of first-degree robbery in connection with the Subway holdup, Johnson said. Both men are being held at Mobile County Metro Jail and are awaiting bail hearings set for 8:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the jail log.The 16-year-old's mother, Suzanne Figaro, said she was disappointed with her son and had no plans to post bond for his release from jailYou try to raise them right," said Figaro, standing in the driveway of her Leinkauf-area home. "You think you teach him everything you can."Suzanne Figaro said Tuesday that she did not know her son was arrested until television news reporters informed her earlier in the day. She said that the last time she saw him was before she went to bed Monday night, shortly before he was arrested.Dressed in a conservative suit and wearing a cross necklace, the mother said she had wanted her son to enroll at Bishop State Community College. He could start college, she said, because he had completed his GED.Instead, he chose another way to get by, she said."I guess this is what he wants," she said. Her son is connected to nine robberies, but the jail records show that so far he is only charged with six counts of first-degree robbery, Johnson said. It's unlikely that prosecutors would levy charges against the 16-year-old in all nine cases, Johnson said
