Athens, Ala. Nov. 5 2007

Athens Police arrested a Tennessee man shortly after a robbery at the Hometown Grocery store on Monday morning.
Police say Barry Eugene Wiggins, 54, of 1834 Maple Ash Avenue in Columbia, Tennessee is in jail after a bizarre turn of events this morning.
Police say Wiggins asked the clerk at Hometown Grocery Monday for change for a dollar, Monday morning, shortly after 8 a.m. He started to walk away, then turned around gave the clerk a note, saying "This is an armed robbery, give me all of the money in the drawer. I have a gun."
The clerk complied, and Wiggins drove away from the store in a maroon van. Officer Michael Cash was returning from Decatur, and spotted the van headed south near Calhoun Community College. The officer followed the van into Decatur, and stopped the driver on Wilson Street with the assistance of Decatur Police.
Police found the cash from the grocery store robbery in the passenger seat. They took him back to Hometown Grocery, where the clerk identified Wiggins as the robber.
Wiggins told Officer Cash he took several pills, when the officer got behind him on the road. Police took Wiggins to Athens Limestone Hospital for treatment.
Wiggins is charged with first-degree robbery and using a false identity to obstruct justice. Wiggins is now in the Limestone County Jail.
