Brighton MI. Nov. 16 2007 A Brighton Township man who allegedly tried to steal beer and milk from the Genoa Township Wal-Mart is also facing criminal charges for trying to assault store security officers.
Trooper Jeff Frasier of the Brighton post of the Michigan State Police said the man allegedly loaded a shopping cart with four cases of beer and milk at about 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, then exited the store without paying.
When confronted by store loss-prevention officers, the man reportedly pushed the cart at the officers and headed toward his vehicle. The officers gave chase and the suspect almost struck them as he drove his vehicle recklessly through the parking lot, Frasier said.
Frasier was able to stop the suspect's vehicle on Grand River Avenue near Herbst Road, where he was arrested without further incident.
Frasier is seeking charges of unarmed robbery and felonious assault against the Brighton Township man, who is being held in the Livingston County Jail on a parole violation.
According to state records, the man is on parole for fleeing police and retaining a financial transaction device without consent. He also has served prison time for first-degree retail fraud, delivery of a controlled substance, and breaking and entering.
