KITTERY, Maine — Two Massachusetts residents were arrested Saturday for shoplifting, leading police on a short pursuit. One of the suspects apparently swallowed two baggies of heroin as the incident unfolded.Vincent Brown, 37 of Mattapan, Mass., a convicted felon and registered sex offender, allegedly swallowed two baggies of heroin containing six hits before his arrest, but told police what he had done and was taken to the hospital where he spent four hours waiting for the evidence to be cleared from his system before being turned back over to police, Sgt. Charles Denault said Sunday.Deborah Robinson, 57 of 67 Garfield Ave. in Hyde Park, Mass., who police say acted as the initial getaway driver and who drove off despite having a retail employee part way into the vehicle, was also charged in the incident.Chief Edward Strong said police received a call from Brookstone in The Maine Outlet on Route One that a shoplifter had been spotted by an employee shortly before 4 p.m. The employee followed the suspect out into the parking lot. Denault said an altercation ensued in the parking lot with the suspect hollering obscenities at the employee. Denault said the employee attempted to retrieve the merchandise, which included four DVD players valued at about $200 each, from the back of their Volkswagen Jetta when Brown instructed Robinson to drive the car. The employee became caught partway in the car and was dragged for an unknown distance before becoming freed, Denault said."He got one of the DVD players back," Denault said. Another one fell out of the car, but someone else retrieved it before police could.Denault spotted the vehicle heading onto Interstate 95 from Route 236 and was able to pull the car over after a short pursuit. Robinson and Brown both admitted to being involved in the theft, Denault said and they were later identified by the employee.Denault said Brown was taken to York Hospital after telling police he swallowed the bags of heroin."The subject said he had done this before and his stomach had been pumped," Denault said. Both Brown and Robinson have "extensive" criminal histories, Denault said. Brown has criminal convictions for shoplifting, drugs, including manufacturing and distributing, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault of police officers and larceny.
